Let’s say the sole purpose is for most of your meals, crafts or homework, your choice would lead to having durability with ease of cleanliness.
Or, if it serves strictly for events and celebrations your choice for a table is different. Whether a formal area or traditional you might want to consider the amount of seating and whether you want tables leaves to extend for more seating. Remember to consider the size of the space and what it will permit.
EVALUATING SPACE
Grab a tape measure and measure the space before venturing out to search for a table. Remember that the ideal space between walls and table is 36 – 48” (allows guests enough space to move chairs in and out from table). And don’t forget that if a table has leaves or extensions, add another 12 or more inches to the table surface size.
What is the shape and size of the room? What is the use of the table? If the room is long and narrow, a rectangular or oval table would be a good choice.
Round and square tables maximize space in a small area. Round tables offer more leg room and the table top typically sits on a pedestal base. Square tables are also good in small spaces and can be tucked into a corner when not in use.
EVALUATING STYLE
There are many different styles to choose from. We could start on Traditional and go to the other end of the spectrum with Country Rustic. Traditional style comes in a variety of shapes but they are typically dark solid wood with ornate legs. Contemporary Modern usually is glass or marble top with metal bases or sleek all wood tables. Transitional is a combination of traditional and contemporary. It lends a casual appearance. And another one is Farmhouse/Country Rustic. It typically is casual and the weathered wood and can appear to be distressed.
Whatever your choice may be whether traditional, transitional, farmhouse or a combination of all, just keep it simple and classic. Have fun.
