Summer is in full swing, and the heat waves keep coming. With countless people flocking to pools, lakes, rivers and beaches looking to beat the heat, it’s rather fitting that design trends for 2020 (yes folks, the future is here), are ocean inspired!
PANTONE Color Institute named the color of the year for 2019 as Living Coral. We talked about it earlier this year, but for those of you who missed it, let’s recap. Living Coral is a swoon-worthy hue that floats somewhere between pink and orange, in a lively yet mellow way. Coming off the heels of the prior year’s more classic choice of violet, this color was a fun, and unexpected change for the design world.
While the coral choice was a 180 ° direction change from its predecessor, the 2020 ocean theme will tie in wonderfully with pieces you may have already incorporated.
But, don’t bust out your baby blue paint and seashells just yet! The beach house you’re already picturing is about to be joined by a few more colors, and it’s going to take the ocean theme to a whole new level!
While blues are still set to be the cornerstone, PANTONE’s Vice President, Laurie Pressman said, “Browns are important across the gamut and are inspired by dried seaweed and driftwood.” Whites will range in sand-tinted hues, while blacks are expected to be more deep, wavy and mysterious, similar to the dark depths to the ocean. We will be seeing cool and oxygenated greens, as well as the earthy tones of corals and pinks from last year.
Are you swooning yet?
This year we have covered important elements such as; texture, sparkle, lighting, as well as incorporating natural elements, and thinking outside of the box to create your perfect space. It seems that we were right on track, considering that Pressman also said the key for 2020 will be combining colors through texture and layering, summarized with, “It’s anything but flat”.
While it may seem premature to be talking about next year’s design trend already, (like bringing out bathing suits in January, or Christmas decor in September) remember that the point here is to just be aware of what’s on the horizon. As you start to see these trends hit the market, consider how you’d like to layer pieces into your current home. Or, perhaps this is exactly what you’ve been dreaming of, and its time to completely redo your space!
Remember, it’s about what makes YOU feel best. Your home should bring you joy, and peace… and if the beach is your perfect oasis, then 2020 is your year!
