Greenery – Nature’s Neutral
I’m pretty sure the ground hog is the only one who wanted six more weeks of winter. Even PANTONE, the leading authority on color, dreamed that spring would come early. Each year the color mega-house chooses one color that is expected to make waves in all facets of the design industries from the runway to the most used paint colors. This year they chose “Greenery” as 2017’s Color of the Year.
As quoted from PANTONE’s website, greenery is “a refreshing and revitalizing shade…that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew.” This bold, yellow-green hue is illustrative of the growth and vibrancy to come and signals for all of us to center, breathe deep, and reinvigorate our souls.
Why Greenery?
The Color of the Year serves as a symbolic selection of our current global culture. The color choice each year is an expression of what PANTONE views as our attitude towards the world around us and is a snapshot of our society’s movements as a whole. As a spunky and lush shade, “Greenery” is a representative hue lending us to get back to nature – submersing ourselves in our surroundings and stepping outside of the modern, technology influenced environment. It’s a representation of our desire to see the natural beauty and to bring the outside in. And it’s a movement we are already seeing a lot of with the birth of more sustainability programs, expansive architecture immersed in wilderness, urban parks and other lifestyle choices associated with the natural world.
Color Pairings
As “nature’s neutral,” this lively hue lends itself to a variety of color combinations. Pair with other neutral browns for an even greater notion of the outdoors and with blacks and whites to create a deep contrast. Couple the vibrant green with other bright yellows, pinks, and oranges for a splash of fun and with calmer pastels for a more serene atmosphere. One of our favorites is to use “Greenery” with moody blues, deep mahogany reds, and plum purples for a uniquely centered color palette.
How to Incorporate It
Whether you’re going for a completely new designed room or just a simple addition to your current blueprint, greenery is an easy shade to work with. Paint the color on a number of walls for the full nature inspired affect or create a focal point on one accent wall with a green-yellow colored wall covering in a unique pattern (Clarke + Clarke wows us with this pick). Incorporate the hue underfoot with an artfully designed rug (check out this one from CHANDRA) or create a splash of color by replacing the winter throw pillows with those in this energetic hue (Pine Cone Hill has these classic stripe ones). If needing a softer inclusion idea, simply bring in some lush foliage into your design with the use of plant stands and hanging wall planters or incorporating some faux foliage into the space (see our favorite plant brand – New Growth Designs). We also love the idea of side chairs or sofas in the green tint (Pasha Home Furniture, Inc’s Korra-Green fabric is a perfect match) paired with softer, whiter wall and room palettes.
